However, the style you choose significantly dictates what you’ll feel in the chair.

The Fine Line & Tiny Tattoo Experience
Pain Level: 1–3 /10
If you’re looking for something delicate—a minimalist script, a dainty frangipani, or a geometric souvenir—you’re in luck. Fine line tattoos are generally the least painful way to get inked.
- Why it’s a breeze: Fine line work uses much smaller needle groupings (often just a single needle). Because the surface area being "punctured" is so tiny, the trauma to the skin is minimal. Most clients describe it as a light "scratch" or a "tickle."
- The Benefit: Because these sessions are usually shorter (30 minutes to 2 hours), your body’s endorphins usually last the whole time, making it easy to stay relaxed.
- Best for: First-timers, travelers on a tight schedule, or those with a lower pain threshold.

Large Scale Black & Grey, Black Work, Traditional, And Japanese Styles
Pain Level: 7–10 /10 (Without Numbing)
When we move into the world of "Old School" Traditional, Bold Blackwork, or intricate Japan Tattos, the sensation changes. These styles are about impact, saturation, and longevity.
- The Endurance Test: These tattoos require thicker outlines and "color packing" (shading in large areas with solid pigment). This means the needles stay in contact with the skin for longer periods, and the skin can become more sensitive as the session goes on.
- The "Heat" Factor: After a few hours of shading, the area can feel quite warm or "sunburnt." For a large back piece or a full sleeve, the challenge isn't just the needle—it’s the duration.
- The Bali Studio Solution: Professional Numbing: We believe getting a beautiful piece of art shouldn't be a torture test. For these "heavy-hitter" sessions, we offer numbing cream. * How it works: We apply the cream about 45–60 minutes before we start.
- The Result: It significantly dulls the "sharp" sensation of the needle, allowing you to sit comfortably for 4+ hours. This is a game-changer for those sitting for ribs, stomachs, or knee-caps!

TO NUMB OR NOT TO NUMB?
The Artist’s Perspective
While we offer numbing options for comfort, it isn't always the best choice for the art itself. At our studio, we prioritize the longevity and precision of your tattoo above all else.
Why we recommend going "Natural" for Fine Line & Geometric
For our signature Fine Line, Minimalist, Micro realism and Geometric tattoos, we actually do not recommend using numbing cream. Here is why:
- Skin Texture: Numbing creams can slightly change the texture of your skin, often making it feel "tougher" or less pliable.
- Precision is Key: In geometric work, there is zero room for error. We need the skin to be in its natural, soft state to ensure those razor-sharp lines and perfect circles.
- The Healing Process: Occasionally, numbing agents can cause a bit of localized swelling. If we tattoo over swollen skin, the design might shift slightly once the swelling goes down.
- The "Fine Line" Advantage: Because these styles are so gentle and use such small needles, the pain is already very low. Most of our clients find they don't need help with the sensation anyway!
When is Numbing actually Recommended?
We save the numbing cream for the "Heavy Hitters." If you are booked in for:
- Large-scale Traditional or Japanese pieces
- Heavy Blackwork or solid color packing
- Long sessions (3+ hours) in sensitive areas like the ribs or stomach
In these cases, the benefit of keeping you still and comfortable outweighs the slight change in skin texture, as these styles involve "packing" ink rather than single-needle precision.
The Rule of Thumb: In almost all cases—except for large and heavily shaded work—we recommend going without numbing cream. It results in a smoother process and a cleaner heal!
