Perfect for: Fine line work, first-timers, and travelers who want to get tattooed and get back to the beach.
- Outer Arm & Shoulder: The classic spot. The skin is thick and there are fewer nerve endings. Itโs the perfect canvas for a diverse range of styles.
- Forearm: Very manageable. Whether itโs a delicate script or a bold traditional dagger, the forearm is a "low-stress" zone.
- Outer Thigh: Plenty of muscle and "padding" here, making it one of the least painful spots for larger illustrative pieces.

The "I Can Feel It" Zone
Pain Level: 4โ6 /10
Perfect for: Mid-sized pieces. Youโll definitely feel the "scratch," but most people handle it without a problem.
- Inner Arm (Bicep): The skin here is softer and more sensitive than the outer arm.
- Calves: Generally fine, though it can get "jumpy" as you get closer to the back of the knee.
- Upper Back: Great for fine line florals, but can feel a bit "bony" near the shoulder blades.

Perfect for: Experienced collectors or those utilizing our Numbing Cream option.
- Ribs & Sternum: The skin is thin and sits directly over bone. This is where fine line style shinesโsince the needles are smaller, the "vibration" on the bone is much less intense.
- The Knee & Elbow "Ditch": These joints are notoriously sensitive. For large Japanese or Traditional pieces that wrap around these areas, we highly recommend our numbing protocol.
- Stomach: Without numbing, the stomach is a true test of endurance. It's a soft area that requires a steady hand and a patient client.

The Artistโs Perspective
While we offer numbing options for comfort, it isn't always the best choice for the art itself. At our studio, we prioritize the longevity and precision of your tattoo above all else.
Why we recommend going "Natural" for Fine Line & Geometric
For our signature Fine Line, Minimalist, Micro realism and Geometric tattoos, we actually do not recommend using numbing cream. Here is why:
- Skin Texture: Numbing creams can slightly change the texture of your skin, often making it feel "tougher" or less pliable.
- Precision is Key: In geometric work, there is zero room for error. We need the skin to be in its natural, soft state to ensure those razor-sharp lines and perfect circles.
- The Healing Process: Occasionally, numbing agents can cause a bit of localized swelling. If we tattoo over swollen skin, the design might shift slightly once the swelling goes down.
- The "Fine Line" Advantage: Because these styles are so gentle and use such small needles, the pain is already very low. Most of our clients find they don't need help with the sensation anyway!
When is Numbing actually Recommended?
We save the numbing cream for the "Heavy Hitters." If you are booked in for:
- Large-scale Traditional or Japanese pieces
- Heavy Blackwork or solid color packing
- Long sessions (3+ hours) in sensitive areas like the ribs or stomach
In these cases, the benefit of keeping you still and comfortable outweighs the slight change in skin texture, as these styles involve "packing" ink rather than single-needle precision.
The Rule of Thumb: In almost all casesโexcept for large and heavily shaded workโwe recommend going without numbing cream. It results in a smoother process and a cleaner heal!

Skill vs. Pain
Many people walk into a studio expecting a "horror story" level of pain, but here is the truth: Tattoos shouldn't be painful as hell. If you are getting a small tattoo on a "pain-safe" spot (like your outer arm) and it feels unbearable, something is wrong. Usually, itโs not youโitโs the artist.
- The "Heavy Hand" Red Flag: If an artist lacks skill or is rushing, they often go too deep into the dermis. This causes unnecessary pain and "trauma" to the skin.
- The Result of Going Too Deep: When an artist goes too deep, it doesn't just hurt more; it ruins the art. This leads to blowouts (where the ink spreads and looks blurry under the skin), scarred/raised outlines, and a messy healed look.
- The Professional Touch: At our studio, our artists are trained to find the "sweet spot" in the skin. Especially with Fine Line work, the needle should graze the perfect depth to ensure the line stays crisp, thin, and heals perfectly without causing you a meltdown in the chair.
The Bottom Line: If it feels like they are "carving" into you rather than tattooing you, they probably are. Choose a studio that prioritizes technical precision over just "getting the job done."
CLOSING CHECKLIST
How to Prep for Your Session
Since you'll likely be going "natural" for your fine line piece, here is how to handle the Bali elements like a pro:
- Eat a Hearty Meal: Don't show up on an empty stomach! Visit a local warung for some Nasi Campur to keep your blood sugar stable.
- Hydrate (With Water): Save the Bintangs for the celebration. Alcohol thins your blood and makes the skin more sensitive.
- The "Old Clothes" Rule: Wear comfortable, loose clothing that provides easy access to the area being tattooed. Most importantly: wear clothes you donโt mind getting dirty. Between ink splatters and stencil transfer fluid, there is a good chance your outfit might get a "permanent" souvenir too! Leave the white designer linen at the hotel.
- Sun Safety: We cannot tattoo sunburnt skin. If youโve spent too much time at Uluwatu or Canggu beach without SPF, we may have to reschedule your session to ensure a safe heal.
