THE ULTIMATE 2026 AFTERCARE GUIDE

So, you’ve just walked out of our studio with some fresh ink—congratulations! Now comes the most common question we get here in the tropical paradise of Canggu: "When can I get back in the water?"

While Bali is famous for its world-class surf and stunning villa pools, your new tattoo is essentially an open wound. The way you treat it in the first few days determines whether it stays crisp and vibrant or ends up faded and infected.

Here is everything you need to know about swimming, showering, and "Second Skin" care while enjoying your Bali holiday.

BALI AFTERCARE GUIDE

Here is a fresh fine line piece protected by Second Skin. We intentionally leave wider borders than most local studios—this simple detail prevents peeling and keeps your tattoo 100% sterile while you enjoy your holiday.

1. THE 4-DAY GOLDEN RULE: KEEP THE SECOND SKIN ON

At our studio, we use a medical-grade adhesive bandage known as Second Skin. This is your tattoo’s best friend. It acts as a breathable barrier against the Bali dust, humidity, and bacteria.

  • Wait 4 Days: You must avoid swimming entirely while the Second Skin is applied.

  • Why? Even though the bandage is water-resistant, "soaking" it in a pool or the ocean can cause the edges to lift or moisture to trap underneath. This creates a breeding ground for bacteria.

  • The Peel-Off Service: If you are staying in the Canggu area and notice your Second Skin starts to peel or leak on the 1st or 2nd day, don't panic. Stop by the shop! We are happy to clean the area and apply a fresh piece of Second Skin for you to ensure you stay protected for the remainder of the healing window.

2. SHOWERING: KEEP IT QUICK AND COOL

You don't have to skip the shower, but you do need to change your routine.

  • Cool to Lukewarm Water: Avoid hot showers. Heat opens your pores and can cause the ink to "weep" or the Second Skin to lose its adhesive grip.

  • Speed is Key: Keep your showers quick. You want to avoid "pruning" your skin.
  • No Scrubbing: Let the water run gently over the bandage. Do not use a loofah or harsh soaps on the tattooed area. Pat dry very gently with a clean paper towel or let it air dry.

3. THE "DRY SWIM" LOOPHOLE (UPPER BODY TATTOOS ONLY)

We know the Bali heat is intense. If you have a small tattoo on your upper body—such as the back of the neck, shoulder, or high on the arm—you can still enjoy the pool with extreme caution.

  • Keep it High and Dry: You may enter the pool only if you can guarantee the tattooed area stays completely out of the water.
  • The Risk: Splashing happens. If you are in a public pool or the ocean, the risk of "accidental" submersion is high. Only attempt a "dry swim" in a controlled environment (like your private villa pool) where you can keep your upper body dry.
  • Note: This does not apply to leg, torso, or forearm tattoos. If there is a chance it will get wet, stay on the sun lounger!

4. WHY THE OCEAN AND POOLS ARE RISKY

It’s tempting to jump into the Indian Ocean, but "Bali Belly" isn't the only thing bacteria can cause.

  • Pools: Chlorine is a harsh chemical that can leach pigment out of your skin, leading to a patchy tattoo. Furthermore, public pools are shared environments where bacteria thrive.
  • The Ocean:> Sand and salt are abrasive, and tropical seawater contains microorganisms that can lead to serious infections in fresh tattoos.

THE BALI SURVIVAL GUIDE

AFTERCARE IN THE TROPICS

Getting a tattoo in Bali is easy; keeping it perfect while on holiday is the challenge. The tropical elements—sun, salt, and sweat—are the enemies of fresh ink.

The Sun is the Enemy

Fine line tattoos have less pigment "holding" the line together. The intense Bali UV rays can break down this pigment in days if unprotected. Strategy: Get your tattoo in the last 2–3 days of your trip. If you get it early, keep it covered with loose clothing or a "Second Skin" medical bandage.

The 4-Day Water Rule

You must stay out of the ocean, swimming pools, and saunas for at least 4 days. Bali’s ocean water contains bacteria that can lead to infections, and chlorine in pools will bleach the delicate ink before it has a chance to settle.

Humidity and "The Breathable Method"

In Bali’s humidity, your skin needs to breathe. While you need to keep the tattoo moisturized, applying too much ointment can "suffocate" the tattoo and cause "bubbling." Use a thin, fragrance-free layer of aftercare cream twice a day.

IMPORTANT

PLANNING YOUR APPOINTMENT SAFELY

We understand that travel plans can be unpredictable. We've noticed that sudden issues like "Bali Belly" or unexpected flight changes often lead to last-minute cancellations, especially for appointments booked on the very last day of a trip.

This happens about five times a month, and since most of these cancellations occur just hours before the session, we're unable to find a replacement. Please be aware that all deposits are non-refundable, as we make sure to mention before your payment.

We want to avoid any frustration for you. We really hate for you to lose your deposit—we'd much rather see you get the tattoo you’ve been dreaming of! To help protect your deposit and ensure you get your ink, we strongly recommend booking your appointment with a buffer of at least a week before your departure, especially if you are booking weeks or months in advance.

If an issue does arise, we can offer to reschedule your session (subject to availability) or you can even transfer the slot to a friend if they’d like to book with us instead.
